Almunecar - a day trip ...
On Friday, during your holiday, we will have a day trip out to Almunecar, the pretty seaside town close to where we are based. Friday is market day, & people flock to Almunecar as there is always something interesting to see & buy, from local produce & crafts to gifts & treats. Likewise, the winding streets of Almunecar old town are also a great place to shop... full of little boutiques & hidden squares.
As well as a homely seaside town Almunecar has a historical fusion of Phoenician, Roman, Arabic & Moorish cultures. The El Majuelo Botanical Gardens & Syrian mythology sculpture park are close by the Phoenician & Roman ruins where, once upon a long ago, prized salted fish was processed that was sent across the Roman Empire. Above, the Arabic castle, Castillo de San Miguel, overlooks all, standing strong on the cliffs gazing out to sea where once the Syrian Arabic emir Abd al-Rahman landed on the shore, changing the course of Spanish history for hundreds of years, creating a time of prosperity, development & peace between peoples of all religions.
Almunecar is a town brimming with public art, particularly sculpture, celebrating this small town's history & culture, photo opportunities arise around many corners. And, of course, the beach, a wide open bay with dark soft sand meeting turquoise blue water... a long tiled, promenade that is wonderful for a stroll along while breathing in the invigorating sea air.
We will visit the market in the morning, giving plenty of time to browse & buy, then stroll through the old town for more shopping opportunities, stopping for morning coffee or Spain's wonderful churros & hot chocolate in one of the squares. After this we will take a gentle walk over to the El Majuelo Botanical Garden Sculpture Park & Roman fisheries, wander around town, maybe visit the castle, & eventually lunch at one of Almunecar's 's seafront restaurants. Once we have lunched we can stroll along the promenade, take in the energy of the sea, have a sneaky paddle even!
